In this thesis, the author asserts that through the process of cultural contextualization, the universal norms of international criminal law are interpreted and defined in a manner which resonates across cultures. Critics of the international criminal legal system assert that it fails to adequately accommodate the cultural diversity of its subjects. Through a detailed examination of international criminal jurisprudence, the author displays that the consideration of cultural context has become commonplace for international criminal tribunals. Furthermore, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court contains provisions which allow for the consideration of cultural context in assessing international crimes.
